The BMW E30 is a compact executive car which was produced by BMW from 1982 to 1991. All variants used a rear-wheel-drive layout with the exception of the all-wheel-drive 325iX. The BMW M3 was first introduced on the E30 platform. The E30 was released in 1982 and was replaced by the BMW E36 in 1992. BMW continued to produce the cabriolet (convertible) E30 well into 1992 and the Touring until June 1993.

The cars were powered by a range of inline 4-cylinder and inline 6-cylinder engines. The E30 BMW M3 was fitted with a high-revving 4-cylinder petrol engine (BMW S14) which produced 175 kW (238 PS; 235 hp) in its final European-only iteration.

To keep the car competitive in racing following year-to-year homologation rules changes, homologation specials were produced. Homologation (motorsport) rules roughly stated that the race version must reflect the street car aerodynamically and in engine displacement. These include: the Evo 1, Evo 2, and Sport Evolution some of which featured less weight, improved aerodynamics, taller front wheel arches (Sport Evolution; to further facilitate 18-inch (460 mm) wheels in DTM), brake ducting, and more power. Other limited-production models (based on evolution models but featuring special paintwork and/or unique interior schemes commemorating championship wins) include the Europa, Ravaglia, Cecotto, and Europameister.

Production of the original E30 M3 ended in early 1992.

The Boxster S engine produces 232 kW (315 hp) at 6,700 rpm, the 3.4-litre flat-six engine with direct fuel injection (DFI) and VarioCam Plus delivers a mighty 37 kW (50 hp) and 80 Nm more than the engine in the Boxster. Maximum torque of 360 Nm is available from 4,500 to 5,800 rpm. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is completed in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 279 km/h can be achieved. Nevertheless, the dynamic performance of the Boxster S can be further enhanced. With the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), the Boxster S reaches 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds and boasts a top speed of 277 km/h. The Launch Control feature of the optional Sport Chrono Package reduces the time to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h to just 4.8 seconds.
